Active School Week 2025
Active School Week 6th-9th May 2025
We had a wonderful active school week in Kilnagross N.S. We started each day with a
‘wake up and shake up’ dance for the whole school. The children enjoyed playing a variety
of games including basketball, football, tennis, badminton, dodgeball, obstacle course
activities, skipping and much more.
We were delighted to welcome Breda McNulty from ‘On Your Feet Dance’ to our school
during active week. The children really enjoyed learning new dance routines. We also had
our weekly GAA football coaching with Odhran.
Written homework was replaced with physical activity tasks. We were blessed with
beautiful weather for the whole week so everyone was delighted to complete their active
homework outdoors.
We had great fun for our skipping takeover on the last day of active week. The whole
school joined together to celebrate the end of our four-week skipping challenge.
To finish off active school week, we had our annual teachers v students event! The pupils
took on the teachers in a game of ‘over the river’. The children were victorious yet again!
What a fantastic, fun-filled week!
Active School Week 2024
Active School Week 24th-28th April 2023
We all had a fantastic active school week in Kilnagross N.S. Each morning we all gathered
together in the yard and completed ‘a wake up and shake up’. The children danced to many
lively songs including the “cha cha slide”, the “macarena” & “I like to move it”. It was brilliant
fun and such a fantastic start to the day.
The children had the opportunity to play a variety of games during break and lunch for the
week. They played basketball, football, rounders, hula hoop games, skipping games, beanbag
games, howlers, relays, badminton, tennis, dodgeball, obstacle course activities and much
more.
All Ireland boxing champion visits Kilnagross N.S.!
We were all honoured to have local All Ireland boxing champion, Sarah McTiernan and her
coach Sadhbh from Drumsna boxing club as guests in our school during Active School
Week. Sarah brought along her winning medal and very kindly answered lots of questions
from the students. There was great excitement when Sarah and Sadhbh gave a boxing
demonstration!
Visiting Coaches
We were delighted to welcome an Olympic handball coach and a badminton coach to our
school during active week. The coaches provided taster sessions to the children in these
wonderful sports. We also had our weekly GAA football coaching with Jensen. It was
fantastic to have such a wide variety of sports available to the children.

Movement Breaks
Every class completed movement breaks throughout the day in the classroom. We also
tried ‘standing desks’ which was a great novelty! What a great way to get active during a
lesson.
Active Walkway
Each class was very busy walking on our active walkway route around the school. Each
teacher used the walkway to promote physical activity in a cross-curricular way.
Active Homework
Written homework was replaced with physical activity tasks for the week. Each child was
given an active homework sheet for the week and they coloured in each activity as they
completed it. It was amazing to hear the variety of ways the children kept active in the
evenings after school.
Olympians Live Event
The children tuned into an Olympians Live online event with world champion gymnast Rhys
McClenaghan & Olympic bronze medalist boxer Aidan Walsh. The two super star athletes
shared their inspiring stories , answered student questions and demonstrated some
Olympic movement breaks which the children completed in class.
Table Tennis Takeover
We had great fun for our table tennis takeover!
Whole School Fun Event & Pupils vs Teachers Contest
To finish off active school week, the whole school joined together for a run, hop & skip
relay! Everyone worked very well as a team and had super fun. One of the highlights of the
week was the teachers vs students event! The pupils took on the teachers in a game of
dodgeball which created great excitement! Everyone had a wonderful, active and fun-filled
week!
May 2022
The whole school recently participated in an “Active Break Every Day Challenge”, where the teachers arranged various activities throughout the day.
In May 2022, the school took part in Active Schools Week, participating in a range of activities during the week from obstacle courses, to balancing skills, from hopscotch to dancing. The teachers got involved too and ended the week with a basketball game between children and teachers…..we can’t remember who won?!
